Finalistenes bilder skal stilles ut i London denne våren. I april skal vinnerne kåres under en seremoni på Somerset House i forbindelse med den månedslange festivalen World Photo London.

Odaka lies on the northeastern coast of Japan. It was once home to 13,000 people, but today it is almost a ghost town. When the earthquake and tsunami of March 11 triggered blasts at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a 20 km radius exclusion zone was imposed by the Japanese Government. Within this zone, radiation emissions have been registered at four times the level considered safe for humans. Odaka is only 15 km north of the plant. A few days after the Exclusion Zone was created, I was one of the first photographers to document life inside the zone.

Over three decades of oil drilling in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Texaco (now Chevron), one of the America's largest companies, dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest, polluting rivers and streams that local people depend on for drinking, cooking, bathing and fishing and leaving them suffering a wave of cancers, miscarriages and birth defects. 30.000 Ecuadorians are demanding justice in a landmark class action lawsuit. In February 2011, after 18 years in court, a judge in Ecuador ordered Chevron to pay $8.6 billion to clean up the contamination that Texaco left in the Amazon but Chevron has appealed the decision and the trial is still ongoing.

Asia, Mongolia. 18/03/11. Erdene Tuya, 29 years old, is pushing out from her gher a sheep which wants to get in, looking for a warmer place. In the backgound some dead sheep. In Mongolia's Arkhangai province, the Tsamba family lives on the edge, struggling through harsh winters alongside their herd of sheep. Severe winter conditions, known as dzud, have been responsible for the deaths of half the family's once 2,000-strong herd over the past three winters. Recently, in search of warmer pastures, the Tsambas moved from Bulgan province in the north to this region near a central Mongolian village called Ulziit.

The gentle physical closeness within the images, their coalescent bodies share a constant touch or whisper a secret word. Their matching outfits betray their analogous condition. We know that identity is created by both nature and nurture, genetically and environmentally. As humans we believe ourselves to be unique and aspire to gain control of our destiny. Our aim is to form deep personal relationships and make connections beyond a singular life. Yet as a twin, these destinies are resolved even before birth, you are given a life partner the moment you are born."

All images are taken in the city of Monterrey Mexico where I live. They are done during 7 and 9:30 AM on one of the busiest highways in Monterrey. Some are done in low light as to not be seen by the car poolers. I started doing these images while doing a commission on uses of the street in Monterrey.

In the remote region, which borders Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China live the last remaining Eagle hunters in the world. For centuries these people have hunted foxes and other small animals with their Golden Eagles. These Eagle live with them and in the winter months they are a very important way the hunters get their food and the fur which they use to make their clothes. Often in temperatures below - 40 they out hunting with the birds.

The southern Russian city of Sochi lies on the Black Sea. It attracts predominantly Russian holidaymakers who come for a mix of sun, sea, sand and nightlife. Restaurants are plentiful and competition is fierce. In the past decade, Soviet interiors have been mostly replaced by an eclectic mix of Roman, Greek and other unidentifiable cultural elements. Every restaurant employs a regular live musician. From behind a laptop, they blast Russian chansons and popsa into the restaurant through a wall of speakers. This renders any kind of conversation impossible. But thatÄôs not the reason why Russians go to a restaurant.
