Recently displaced Muslims take up shelter at a destroyed mosque after fleeing a government offensive against the Tamil Tigers. A number of civilians were killed and wounded and thousands displaced. The mosque was destroyed in 1990 when the LTTE, a Tamil military group attacked Muslims and ethnically cleansed them from the area.

Daily life at the Bon Marche hospital in Bunia, eastern Congo, May 22, 2005. Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, runs the 330-bed hospital free of charge to those in need from Bunia and the Ituri region. The government-run hospital in the town lacks proper facilities and charges people for health care.

Young girls leave a camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) to gather firewood. For some the work will take more than 7 hours and lead them past government checkpoints and leave them exposed to attacks. All the people express fear and wish there were a more secure way to gather wood, essential for cooking in the camp. Girls as young as 8 have been raped, attacked and killed trying to get wood.
